The sound design for In The Deep is deeply rooted in the intersection of nature’s vast, unforgiving beauty and the intimate, often painful journey of personal loss. Set against the backdrop of the Oregon wilderness, the soundscape is designed to reflect both the isolation and the quiet solidarity that emerge when individuals are forced to confront grief in its rawest forms.
At the core of the sound design is the idea of memory. Though the characters are physically isolated in the woods, the memory of their lost friend, sibling, and confidant lingers in every crackle of the fire, every gust of wind, and every subtle shift in the air. This presence, even when not seen, is felt in the small, intimate sounds that surround them—whispers of the past that rise to the surface when the storm rages, just as their grief does. The characters' journey through grief, loss, and the eventual sense of community is reflected in how the sound both isolates and connects them.
